The Opioid Response Network (ORN) is committed to supporting the integration of diversity, equity and inclusion across the substance use prevention, treatment, recovery, and harm reduction workforce. The ORN offers workshops and training, technical assistance, and ongoing consultation and support for all your diversity and racial equity capacity building efforts. This includes requests related to various diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) topics, such as addressing racial disparities and the intersection of race with social determinants of health; aging and race with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex (LGBTQI+) health; gender identity; structural barriers for immigrants, and health disparities. DEI is integral to all the work we do across substance use prevention, treatment, harm reduction, and recovery.
Our DEI Training Team has extensive experience in training and technical assistance around racial equity. Read our full Bios here.

Description of racial equity training series and other materials available / under development
1. The Opioid Response Network: Developing a Shared Language For Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (90 minutes)
The Opioid Response Network: Developing a Shared Language For Diversity, Equity and Inclusion training is to provide you with an opportunity to enhance your knowledge and awareness of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) issues. We will explore the potential impact of these issues on our beliefs towards those with backgrounds different from our own and how those beliefs can impact the people we serve and the continuum of care for substance use disorder. This training is an opportunity to reflect on ways to create more welcoming and inclusive places of business for our staff and clients, as well as look at ways organizations can support DEI efforts.
In this training, we will focus on:
- Reviewing baseline language to ground us in a shared understanding of DEI issues
- Exploring equity data on the impact of DEI issues on health care access, experiences, and outcomes
- Unpacking myths about DEI and those impacted by these issues
- Reviewing situational examples and their implications for opioid, stimulant, and substance use disorder
The accompanying Reflection Workbook provides space for you to respond to the questions asked throughout the training and could potentially be used in small groups as people debrief and dialog around the issues raised. The workbook can be printed or completed online as PDF. The self-pace workshops include a recording, slide deck, PDF fillable workbook, and transcript.
2. Systemic Racism and Substance Use Disorder: Anti-Racist Strategies (2 hours)
The Opioid Response Network: Systemic Racism and Substance Use Disorder: Anti-Racist Strategies training builds on the initial training by providing a recap of the key points and the real-world implications of racism in our personal and professional worlds. We then highlight steps and strategies that individuals and organizations can make to become anti-racist.
In this training we will focus on guiding you through:
- Individual action steps for being anti-racist.
- Anti-racism organizational steps.
- Leadership strategies for addressing racial equity.

Our DEI team can work with providers who want to make a commitment to integrating racial equity and DEI in their organization in various ways. Example: Racial Equity Implementation Guide and Institute
Organizational change around racial equity requires a solid implementation plan and commitment to making this plan actionable. Many of our substance use service providers (health departments, healthcare organizations, community-based organizations) are committed to integrating racial equity across their organization but unclear where to start and how to do this work. Our DEI team can work with providers who want to make a commitment to integrating racial equity in their organization in various ways. Our Racial Equity Implementation Institute will work with providers who want to make a commitment to integrating racial equity in their organization. ORN will work with a planning team to review key steps, strategies, and develop an actionable (and measurable) plan. Participating providers will leave the institute with a plan and make a commitment to implementing key action steps in the next grant year.
